New Delhi is acclaimed for being the cultural capital of India, with its history dating back to 5,000 years ago. The city has witnessed the rise and fall of many empires. Contemporary Delhi is a culmination of seven cities built in different eras and by different emperors. Some of the ruins are now spectacular historic sites, the most prominent ones being the Qutub Minar, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, India Gate, Lotus temple, Humayun's Tomb, and Rashtrapati Bhavan. The city is permeated with an array of interesting temples, forts and monuments, museums, parks, and shopping arcades depending on which trail you wanted to follow.

- Language - Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, English is equally in the use.
- Touring season - Oct, Nov, Feb and March. However, winter is severe and long from Nov to early March.
Climate:
The summer season begins from April and ends in the month of June. During the summers the average maximum temperature is 40°C and minimum temperature is 25ºC. The monsoon arrives the city in early July and continues till the end of September. The winter extends from late November to February. The temperature in winters varies between 210C to 50C. January is the coldest month when the temperature drops to a minimum of 0 0 C.
Best Season:
For Sightseeing, the best season to visit Delhi is between October to March. Summers months in Delhi are very hot and it is probably not recommended to visit during May, June or July.
Tips for Travellers

Avoid drinking water from an unknown source. When in doubt ask for "Bisleri, Kinley, Aqua Fina, Himalaya, etc" mineral water (check the seal). As a further precaution bring water purifying tablets.

As in any location, there are those who steal from others, so follow the same rules of safety that you follow traveling anywhere else with respect to using hotel lock boxes, and keeping travel documents safe. When in public places, keep them in your hotel, or with you all the time when moving about.

Taxis (cabs)/Auto Rickshaw (3 wheeler) are available, but unless pre paid you have to negotiate the rate before commencing your journey. Avoid taxis that pick up additional passengers. Don't accept an offer to share a taxi to your hotel unless you know the individual.

Be wary of imposter porters or guides. Never leave your luggage, briefcase or other items unattended.

The voltage used is 220 volts (the U.S. uses 120 volts). You can purchase a converter at most hardware stores for appliances that do not switch to 220V.

Avoid foods which have been laid out in the open, avoid sweets and candies from local markets.

Some religious shrines and places of worship require visitors to observe a dress code such as to avoid shorts and sleeveless shirts.

Tipping is a matter of personal discretion. Although bills normally include a service charge, it is customary to tip in restaurants and other places that cater to tourists.

Photography is prohibited in places of military importance, railway stations, bridges, airports and military installations.
